"The Town of Palm Beach is an extraordinary place. More than a century ago it was the home of the world's largest resort, built by Standard Oil founding partner, Henry Flagler. However, one could literally walk out the front doors of that luxury resort back then and just a short distance away explore an exotic world of jungle trails, alligators, coconut groves, and some of the best fishing anywhere in teh world. During the 1920s Palm Beach experienced tremendous growth as it was transformed from a winter resort to a wealthy enclave of winter homes, predominately Mediterranean Revival in style. It was during this period that Palm Beach's main streets and most of its iconic buildings and clubs were established as lowlands and swampy areas were filled in, eliminating many of the exotic jungle-like areas Palm Beach was known for a quarter century earlier. Life in Palm Beach then was shaped by wealthy young socialites who enjoyed very active social lives dominated by the clubs and theaters. Following World War II Palm Beach slowly made the transition from a seasonal to a year-round community as restaurants and hotels began to stay open all year. Though a number of important historic structures were lost during these years as the entire country seemed to embrace moderism and reject anything that seemed old, most of Palm Beach's iconic buildings did survive. Flagler's winter home, Whitehall, was acquired by his granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews, In 1959 and opened to the public the following year as the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum. The country surrounding Palm Beach grew steadily in the years following the War. In fact, by the 1990s the metropolitan area had become one of the largest in Florida. Long gone are the days of swamps, alligators, and jungle-like trails that were once common in the area around Palm Beach -- replaced by huge gated communities, shopping malls, and wide thoroughfares. However, in spite of the massive changes throughout Palm Beach County over the last century, the Town of Palm Beach still retains much of its original charm." -- from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
