Previous owner's name plate on half title. Frontis plate. 51 b/w plates. xvii, 150 pages, bibliography, index. clean and tight. THE FICKLENESS of Fortune has never been more in evidence than in the case of the painter who makes the subject of this book. In his day, Jehan Foucquet enjoyed a widespread fame and, at a time when Italy was sipping the nectar of the first Renaissance fruits, he was summoned from Tours to Rome to paint the Pope's portrait. From the close of the fifteenth century until the middle of the nineteenth, the name of Foucquet sank deeper and deeper into oblivion and, even now, its due has not been paid. In the censure of those who wisely study the history of the arts his name is still great, but to the large numbers of people for whom painting is no source of scholarship but a fountain merely of interest and delight, the name of Jehan Foucquet means little and, indeed, is hardly known. If, therefore, this book is able to increase the radius of Foucquet's reputation, its existence will be fairly justified. Size: 8vo.

Cloth, 8vo, 25 cm, xiv, [2], 150 pp, 51 plates. From the blurb - "Of the many painters whom the coming Exhibition of French Art at Burlington House will bring into prominence, none will excel Jehan Foucquet, the mediaeval master, who in his day achieved such fame in France and abroad that he was summoned from Tours to Rome to paint the Pope's portrait. But it is not by portraiture alone that Foucquet is remembered. His versatility led him to extend his genius to all kinds of pictorial activity; his marvellous miniatures in illuminated books stand alone amongst those of the century, and few people who have been to Chantilly can fail to remember the pages from the Hours of Etienne Chevalier. The name of Foucquet, however, is even now not as widely known as it deserves and the object of this book is, primarily, to increase the reputation of the greatest French master of the Later Middle Ages, and, secondarily, to exhibit him in his place of eminence amidst the dazzling pageantry of the Mediaeval Scene." Contents - Part One. The Scene: The Social Setting; The Intellectual Background; The Link with Literature and the other Arts; Part Two. The Artist: The Mystery of his Life; The Problem of the 'Juvenilia'; The Question of his Portraits and Enamels; Part Three. The Miniatures: Religious Books. At Chantilly and elsewhere; Secular Books. At Munich and elsewhere; Foucquet and Josephus: (a) The History of the Manuscript of the Antiquités Judaiques; (b) The 'Enlumineur du Duc de Berry'; (c) The Role of Foucquet (d) The Artist of the Second Volume. Appendices I. Drawings attributed to Jehan Foucquet; II. The 'Air de Parenté' between the Antiquités Judaiques and the Trés Riches Heures du Duc de Berry; III. Bibliography; Index. Pencilled shelfmark and initials of the bookseller Albi Rosenthal on front endpapers, contents agetoned, otherwise Good in used, chipped and duststained dustwrapper.
